I hope you enjoyed the first article in this 5 part series which introduces my journey through transformation. If you need a refresher, you can find the article here. Thank you for stopping by and reading my expedition of life. Remember to share, like and comment on the post.
By the end of 2010, I got really sick with the flu only to discover I had lump in my chest which then led to more anxiety. What if I have cancer? Why is this happening to me? How did this happen? I'm going to get a break from the medical system? The questions just kept flooding my mind but the one constant I had were my Tasbihs and my yoga practice.
I originally started making Tasbihs as a hobby, but by this point it became an obsession of mine to create a nicer Tasbih than the last one. Although, I was making the Tasbihs, I still had not recognized my hidden talent for creating beautiful Tasbihs and jewellery.
People at mosque started noticing my Tasbihs and were asking where I had gotten them from and so I would tell them that I made them and they would be surprised but at the same time, members of my community frowned upon my talent as it has been stereo typed that only old ladies with nothing to do made Tasbihs. Also, I did not really believe in myself, as I constantly was told to stop wasting my time and do something that is part of the Canadian way of being and be a part of the rat race.
Today, I'm so glad that I never gave up on designing Tasbihs because I have evolved so much and the Tasbihs have given me so much.
Then out of nowhere, the magic happened! How exciting and I could not believe what had happened. I went to our Mosque in Burnaby, where I was volunteering. I pulled out one of my Tasbihs from my jacket pocket and a fellow volunteer fell in love with the Tasbih and without any hesitation she ordered 5 Tasbihs. You can imagine my level of excitement and my level of fear of not being able to meet my own bar. I overcame that fear because, I knew it was a wonderful opportunity and it could turn into something bigger. It was also a challenge, which I love only because I can press to new highs.
Thereafter, I had a regular client who ordered 5-7 Tasbihs a week and each Tasbih was fancier than the last and I was becoming a pro, which meant I could make more Tasbihs in an hour. You may be wondering is this client buying all of these Tasbihs for herself or as gifts. They were all for herself. For Ismailis, Tasbihs are the same as a lady and her shoes. We need a Tasbih to match every outfit.
Months later, I had another surprise. I received my first order of 20 plus Tasbihs and the rest is history. Every order I take on means, I am raising the bar and building new relationships.
What is one of your fears that you have overcome in the past year?
Fatima
